ABOUT ARTHRITIS
Arthritis is a degenerative disorder of the joint where the cartilage wears out and there is internal derangement leading to pain, deformity and progressive difficulty in day to day activities. When the cause is advanced age, trauma, overuse, poor cartilage quality etc.- it is called osteoarthritis. This simply means Bone (OSTEO) & Joint (ARTHRos) Degeneration (ITIS).
Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory / autoimmune disorders can also cause joint discomfort and degeneration. The disease progress can be slowed / halted to quite an extent with various medications and non-operative modalities. However due to weakening of cartilage and joint structures they finally result in Ostearthritis.
Due to loss of cartilage and derangement of internal structures of the joint, the exposed bone surfaces on either side to rub against each other, resulting in progressive pain, swelling, joint deformity, reduction in the range of motion and inabilty to do routine daily activities. This stage is advanced osteoarthritis.
ABOUT JOINT SURGERIES
Specialised Joint surgeries are performed here designed to suit the patients needs and requirements. ALL PATIENTS DO NOT REQUIRE TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENTS !!! Infact, many patients will not require surgery if diagnosed and treated at the right time.
When osteoarthritis is set only in part of the knee, while the remaining joint is preserved, these patients may require only partial knee resurfacings. This surgery helps the patient to retain their normal knee for another 10-15+ years thus avoiding or delaying total joint replacements. This is called PARTIAL JOINT RESURFACINGS. The recovery is faster than a total joint surgery with a better functional outcome.
TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT is the option and the final solution to a neglected joint where full blown arthritis is set in. However, in this surgery only the eroded cartilage covering is replaced in the entire joint and not the entire joint itself. This surgery is performed using COMPUTER NAVIGATION which greatly increases the accuracy, thus enhancing the recovery and life of the joint clinically when compared to conventional joint surgery.
